After forces from both sides engaged in combat on the Himalayan border in June 2020, which resulted in 24 deaths, relations between India and China have been strained for more than three years.
The expulsion from the Indian side followed a similar exchange between Modi and Xi at the G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia, in November of the previous year. According to an official statement, the two presidents reportedly came to a significant agreement to stabilises the relationship between both their countries respectively.
