Modi-XI meeting: In a significant diplomatic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday during the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia. This meeting marks their first bilateral discussion since the tensions following the 2020 Galwan clash.

What did they talk about in bilateral meet?

The bilateral talks come shortly after India and China agreed on new measures regarding patrolling and disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. The latest agreement allows Indian soldiers to patrol their former points in the Depsang and Demchok areas. Previously, the border disputes had been resolved in other sensitive regions, including Gogra-Hot Springs, Pangong Lake, and the Galwan Valley. This patrolling agreement is seen as a significant diplomatic win for India.

While this was the second interaction between Modi and Xi since the Galwan clash—following a brief conversation at a G20 dinner in November 2020—it represents a more formal opportunity to address critical bilateral issues.

Meetings with other leaders

During the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted a dinner for BRICS leaders, with Modi and Xi seated alongside him. Earlier in the week, Modi also held discussions with Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, focusing on various geopolitical concerns.

Sharing pictures from the ongoing BRICS Summit in Russia, PM Narendra Modi wrote, "Met President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Kazan BRICS Summit. India-China relations are important for the people of our countries, and for regional and global peace and stability. Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity will guide bilateral relations."

Dialogue on the Russia-Ukraine conflict

In his meeting with President Putin, PM Modi emphasized the importance of resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict peacefully. He stated, "We are in constant touch on the issue of ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I said earlier, we believe that problems should be resolved in a peaceful manner." Modi further assured, "India is ready to provide all possible cooperation in times to come."

This gathering at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan presents an essential platform for leaders to address global challenges and foster collaboration among member nations.
