The White House has declared that US President Joe Biden will be welcoming India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 22 for an official state visit, as the United States aims to strengthen its relationship with the biggest democracy in the world.

The White House stated that the state visit, which is the most prominent level of diplomatic reception, will enhance the United States and India’s “common pledge to a free, open, wealthy, and secure Indo-Pacific.”

Despite concerns about human rights and democratic decline under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist leadership, he has been invited to visit the United States. Critics and human rights organisations have accused Modi’s government of trying to target and silence its critics.

Despite concerns over human rights and democratic practices under his leadership, Modi is a highly sought-after leader in the West, as evidenced by his upcoming state visit to the US and his invitation to be the guest of honour at the Bastille Day celebrations in Paris on July 14th.

When asked about the issue of respecting freedoms and rights in India, the spokeswoman for the White House, Karine Jean-Pierre, stated that President Biden is not hesitant to have that conversation with leaders.

According to Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House spokeswoman, the US government frequently holds discussions with high-level Indian government officials regarding concerns about human rights, including religious freedom.

For a long time, the US has aimed to strengthen India as a counterforce to a more forceful China in Asia, and in turn, New Delhi has tried to build relations due to concerns over Beijing’s growing presence on the other side of its border.

The partnership between the US and India has faced a challenge with regards to Ukraine. India, which has been a military ally of Russia for a long time, has urged for an end to the hostilities in Ukraine but has refrained from criticising Russia for its invasion.

Modi’s upcoming visit to the US will be his first state visit to the country, following his participation in the Quad summit held in 2021 with leaders from Australia, Japan, and the US. India has reportedly requested the highest level of protocol for a head of state, and the visit will feature a state dinner.

The Indian government praised the upcoming visit by Modi to the US as a significant event and an opportunity to enhance cooperation with Washington and discuss expanding and strengthening the Quad engagement. The Biden administration previously held a state visit for French President Emmanuel Macron, which included military honours and a gala dinner.

The South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was also hosted for a state visit recently, during which the two countries issued a warning to North Korea about nuclear weapons. The upcoming visit of Modi is expected to enhance the partnership between the US and India in areas such as defence, clean energy, and space. The White House also stated that the visit will cover topics such as education, climate change, development, and health security.
