The agreement between Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky was signed in ongoing G7 Summit in Italy. The deal includes a comprehensive package of military aid and support, featuring additional munitions for air defense systems, counter-artillery radars, and precision aerial munitions. However, the pact does not involve committing US soldiers to Ukraine.

New Delhi: At the ongoing G7 Summit, United States President Joe Biden signed a significant 10-year security pact with Ukraine aimed at bolstering the country's defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict with Russia. With this agreement, the US has committed Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to financially supporting Ukraine for the next 10 years.

It is worth noting that the deal was signed in Fasano, Italy, which shows Biden’s support for the fifteen other countries that have already signed similar agreements in favour of Ukraine.

Together with this, the US and the other G7 members decided to lend Ukraine $50 billion to repair damaged infrastructure and buy armaments; the money will be repaid with interest from Russian assets that were blocked during Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

While speaking at the G7 Summit, Biden targeted Russian President Vladimir Putin and reiterated, "We're not going to back down, Putin needs to hear this again. In actuality, Zelenskyy and I are uniting to oppose this unlawful action.”

What does the agreement include?

According to the sources, this agreement includes a comprehensive package of military aid and support, featuring additional munitions for air defense systems, counter-artillery radars, and precision aerial munitions. The pact also covers economic assistance to help stabilize Ukraine's financial situation and rebuild critical infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks. However, the pact does not involve committing US soldiers to Ukraine.

What if Donald Trump wins the Presidential Election?

However, this pact could face challenges if former President Donald Trump wins the upcoming presidential election. Trump has previously expressed skepticism about extensive US involvement in Ukraine, which could lead to a potential reevaluation or even cancellation of the agreement under a new administration. This political uncertainty adds a layer of complexity to the long-term strategic commitments made by the current administration.

It should be emphasized that this agreement has come after Congress in April gave go-ahead to $60 billion in security funding for Ukraine at Biden’s request. Biden and Zelenskyy's agreement aims to hasten Ukraine's admittance as a NATO member, a goal Zelenskyy has long pursued. As per the agreement, Ukraine has to undertake a range of political, economic, and security changes that align with the objectives of the European Union's ascension and the criteria of NATO.
