New Delhi: As President Joe Biden participates in the G7 summit in Italy, his decision to skip the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland has raised concerns among the global geopolitical landscape. The summit, with attendance from 107 countries and organizations, aims to forge a path to peace in the region. Yet, both Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin (who was not invited) will be notably absent.

Joe Biden chooses to miss

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticized Biden's absence, suggesting it hands a victory to Putin. Instead of Biden, the U.S. will be represented by Vice President Kamala Harris and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. While both are significant figures, their diplomatic influence pales in comparison to that of the President.

A geopolitcal commentator Mario Nawfl wrote on X, "WHY IS BIDEN AT THE G7 BUT NOT THE PEACE SUMMIT? Biden is already in Europe for the G7, which kicks off today in Italy. But guess where he's NOT going in just 2 days? The Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland, a 2-hour plane ride from G7 Italy. This summit, with 107 countries and organizations attending, aims to chart a path to peace. Yet Biden is skipping it, and Putin, who wasn't invited, also won't be there. How can you have a Ukraine Peace Summit without Putin and Biden - the two men supplying the majority of the weapons for this war? Zelensky warns Biden’s absence is a "standing ovation" for Putin. Instead, VP Harris and NSA Sullivan will represent the U.S., but do they carry the same diplomatic clout? Not even close."

Biden's absence a 'standing ovation' for Putin

Zelenskyy expressed disappointment, emphasizing the importance of Biden's presence. "Biden’s absence is a 'standing ovation' for Putin," he warned. The White House, however, maintains that the U.S. remains committed to supporting Ukraine. "The Vice President will underscore the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s effort to secure a just and lasting peace, based on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the principles of the U.N. Charter," stated the White House.

Will these peace efforts actualise?

Despite the robust attendance from over 100 countries, the absence of representatives from key states like China, which cited Russia's exclusion, underscores the complexities of the peace efforts. The summit's effectiveness is questioned without the involvement of major stakeholders, particularly Biden and Putin, who play crucial roles in the conflict due to their countries' military support to Ukraine.

A missed opportunity to establish peace?

Biden’s decision to skip the summit may have broader implications for international diplomatic efforts in resolving the Ukraine conflict. As Zelenskyy and other leaders strive for a peaceful resolution, the absence of top-tier diplomatic representation from the U.S. and Russia raises concerns about the potential outcomes of the summit.Ukraine Conflict
