According to U.S. officials on Thursday, President Joe Biden has secretly permitted Kyiv to fire weapons provided by the United States at targets within Russia, but only in close proximity to the border with the region surrounding Ukraine's northern city of Kharkiv.

Biden, who has up until now adamantly opposed to allowing Ukraine to use American weapons for operations inside Russia, has now changed his position. "According to a U.S. official, the President recently gave his staff instructions to make sure that Ukraine can deploy weaponry supplied by the United States for counterfire operations in the Kharkiv region so Ukraine can retaliate against Russian forces that are attacking them or planning to attack them."

NATO and UN

A request for comment was not immediately answered by Russia's UN mission in New York or its embassy in Washington. NATO allies have been pleading with the United States to permit Ukraine to use Western weaponry against Russian missile launchers and other military installations that are assisting Moscow's cross-border attack that was initiated this month against Kharkiv.

Russian invation

Glide bombs launched by Russian jetfighters operating within Russia toward the Ukrainian military lines and Kharkiv have supported the offensive. Shortly after the Pentagon declared that U.S. policy on using U.S. weapons within Russia had not altered, word leaked out about Biden's decision. Our security assistance to Ukraine is intended for internal use only. Additionally, we neither support nor condone strikes within Russia," Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh stated.
