BBC' Huw Edwards who earns Rs 5 crore, found making 'indecent' images of children

According to police, Huw Edwards, a 62-year-old, is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, Police have also requested media and public members not to publish information on social media that could prejudice future court proceedings.

New Delhi: Former BBC News presenter Huw Edwards has been charged with three charges related to creating indecent images of children, as announced by London’s Metropolitan Police on Monday. A police spokesperson said, the charges related to images allegedly shared on WhatsApp. 

Last month, the police charged Edwards, a former anchor of the BBC’s News at Ten bulletin. He was arrested in November last year, police disclosed. 

Edwards charged with possession of indecent images

“The offences, which are alleged to have taken place between December 2020 and April 2022, relate to images shared on a WhatsApp chat,” the statement said. “Edwards was arrested on November 8, 2023. He was charged on Wednesday, June 26 following authorization from the Crown Prosecution Service.”

Edwards is the subject of allegations involving the possession of indecent images on WhatsApp, including images in Categories A, B and C, with six images in the most severe Category A. If convicted, he could face a maximum jail of 10 years.

Edwards' 40-year BBC career ends

After a distinguished 40-year career at the BBC, during which he became a household name in British television news, Edwards departed his role in late April. 

According to the BBC's recently released annual report, Edwards received a salary of £475,000-£479,999 (approximately $610,000-$616,000) from April 2023 to March 2024, making him the third highest-paid employee at the BBC during that period.
