Unrest in Bangladesh (ANI)

At least 232 people have been reported dead in various violent incidents across Bangladesh over the past three days, following the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India on August 5. The country has been gripped by massive anti-government protests demanding her ouster, leading to a severe escalation in violence.

Hasina’s Fall Sparks Bloodshed

The violent unrest, which has engulfed Bangladesh over the past three weeks, culminated in the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government. An interim administration, now led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, has taken control, but the situation remains volatile. Reuters reported that the overall death toll from the protests has reached 469 people, marking a dark chapter in the nation’s history.

Minorities Targeted Amid Chaos

In the wake of this turmoil, local media have reported severe persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. This wave of violence has driven many Bangladeshis to attempt illegal crossings into India, seeking refuge from the escalating crisis. Prothom Alo, a prominent Bangladeshi daily, reported on Thursday that 232 deaths had occurred, with the majority of fatalities happening on Tuesday. Some victims reportedly succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical treatment.

Opposition Demands Justice

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the main opposition group, has called for Sheikh Hasina to face criminal charges in the country. The BNP has also warned that India risks damaging its ties with Bangladesh by providing refuge to the former leader.
