A protest demanding Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation took a violent turn in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka that killed one police personnel and injured 40 more men in unifiorm. More than 100 civilians were also injured in this protest that demanded also demanded a free and fair election on Saturday. 

Bangladesh protest 

This protest was carried forward by the Bangladesh National Party (BNP), the primary opposition party in the country which had pledged a peaceful rally on October 28 and has received permission to hold the rally in front of the party's central office in Nayapaltan. 

The BNP however, failed to uphold their promise despite the cooperation from the government and the law enforcement agencies resulting in significant disorder and public chaos at the scene. 

The situation escalated as BNP supporters also targeted and attacked the residence of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh during the rally. On Friday afternoon they also attacked the Chief Justice's house, the Judges Quarters, the Police Box, public transportation, and various government properties, including hospitals, according to sources.

Bangladesh's Home Minister speaks 

According to Bangladesh's Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, the video footage clearly showed the involvement of a "Chatra Dal (BNP's students' wing) leader in the policeman's death". 

The Home Minister also added that "the assault on the Chief Justice's residence was an unprecedented incident" and vowed "strict action against those responsible."

Stating his ground on the face of the protests the Home Minister said "The country's constitution does not provide for a caretaker government."

Bangladesh elections 

Tensions between the opposition BNP and Sheikh Hasina's ruling party are likely to increase further with Bangladesh's upcoming elections expected to be held in early January 2024. 

Bangladesh's Prime Minister was a Brussels attending the 'Global Gateway Forum' which was held for two days on October 25 and 26 and returned on Friday, October 27. 

She arrived at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12.15 pm on Friday, and on her return, BNP supporters erupted in protests across Dhaka.
