New Delhi: Bangladesh's Army Chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her position, following a wave of intense protests across the nation. In a televised address, Waker-Uz-Zaman confirmed that he will establish an interim government to guide the country through this turbulent period.

Assuming responsibility for stability

Addressing the nation dressed in military fatigues, Waker-Uz-Zaman declared, "I am taking full responsibility," and pledged to restore stability. Although he did not specify whether he would personally lead the caretaker government, he emphasized the army's commitment to restoring peace. "We will form an interim government," he stated, urging citizens to cease all acts of violence.

Commitment to peace and investigation

The army chief assured the public that efforts would be made to bring peace back to the country, and he vowed to investigate recent incidents of violence. "We will return peace to the country. We ask citizens to stop violence. We will investigate all killings that have happened over the past few weeks," he said, according to Reuters.

Consultations and future steps

Waker-Uz-Zaman also mentioned plans to consult with President Mohammed Shahabuddin on forming the interim government. He has engaged in discussions with key opposition parties and members of civil society, although the ruling Awami League, led by Hasina, has not been involved in these talks. Waker, a seasoned infantry officer with nearly four decades in military service, has experience working both as a UN peacekeeper and in the prime minister’s office.

No curfew or emergency measures

The army chief reassured the public that there is no need for curfews or emergency measures at this time. He promised to work diligently toward resolving the crisis by the end of the day, seeking to calm a nation in turmoil.
