At least 31 were killed in China’s northwestern Ningxia region after a gas explosion took place on Wednesday night, according to the states news agency Xinhua reported.

Details of the gas explosion incident

The tragic incident was reported from a barbecue restaurant in Yinchuan’s capital city, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, just before the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.

Taking notes from the incident, the media reports said that the gas explosion occurred around 8:40 pm, on a bustling street, whilst the people were gathered in preparation for the festival. Moreover, the area has been covered by a densely Muslim population.

How was the explosion caused?

According to media reports, the main reason for the explosion seems to be leakage from a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank at the restaurant.

During the incident, seven injured people were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment for the burns and injuries, caused by shattered glass, the states news agency reported.

President Xi on the incident

Moreover, Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the officials to prioritise the treatment of the injured. Also, he has stressed the need to enhance safety supervision in the industrial sectors.

The country has organised several efforts to improve safety, however, explosion incidents including gas and chemicals remain unfortunately common in China.

Earlier, in 2015, a heart-wrenching series of explosions happened in the country’s northern port city of Tianjin, killing 173 people.
