Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently in Jakarta, Indonesia to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit. Addressing the Summit Modi has called ASEAN as the centre point of India’s Act East Policy while adding that India fully supports the group’s centrality and outlook on the Indo-Pacific.

While terming the 21st century as the century for Asia, PM Modi emphasised on the necessity to build a rule-based post-Covid world order and strengthen the voice of the Global South. “The progress of free and open Indo-Pacific and elevating the Voice of Global South is in the common interest of all,” Modi said at the ASEAN-India summit in Jakarta.

Modi stressed ASEAN’s importance and said it is the central pillar of India’s Act East Policy. He said “”ASEAN occupies prominent place in India’s Indo-Pacific initiative. It is the epicentre of growth as it plays a crucial role in global development.”

“This year’s theme is ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth. ASEAN matters because here everyone’s voice is heard & ASEAN is epicentrum of growth because ASEAN plays an important role in global growth”, Modi added.

The prime minister further mentioned about the India-ASEAN friendship day celebrated last year and also congratulated the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo for organising the Summit and said that he is honoured to have co-chaired this Summit.

“Last year we celebrated the India-ASEAN Friendship Day & gave it a form of comprehensive strategic partnership. Our partnership has reached the fourth decade. It is an honour for me to co-chair this Summit. I want to congratulate Indonesian President Joko Widodo for organising this Summit,” Modi said.

Moreover, Modi highlighted the relationship between India and ASEAN countries by saying that these two regions shared history, geography, values, and our belief in peace which unites India and ASEAN.

“Our history and geography unite India and ASEAN. Along with it, our shared values, regional integration, and our shared belief in peace, prosperity, and a multipolar world also unite us,” he added.

Modi’s arrival in Indonesia

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Indonesia on Thursday morning where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Jakarta International Airport. He was received by I. Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati, Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Protection.

Modi was also welcomed by the Indian community when he reached the hotel. He greeted the members of the Indian diaspora who were excited to meet him and were seen chanting ‘Vande Mataram’.
