The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced the arrest of Colin Gray, 54, the father of the Apalachee High School shooting suspect, on Thursday evening.

According to the sources, Colin Gray faces numerous charges, including:

  • Four counts of involuntary manslaughter
  • Two counts of second-degree murder
  • Eight counts of cruelty to children

GBI officials linked the father's charges directly to his son's actions, stating that Gray allowed his 14-year-old son, Colt Gray, to access a weapon. During a press conference, GBI Director Chris Hosey confirmed the charges against the teenager, who will be tried as an adult. Colt Gray faces four counts of felony murder, and authorities believe he acted alone, with no evidence pointing to an accomplice.

Additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses. Colt Gray has been taken to the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center, with his first court appearance scheduled for Friday at 8:30 am.

What was the incident all about?

The tragic shooting occurred on Wednesday at Apalachee High School, leaving two students and two teachers dead. The victims were identified as Mason Schermerhorn, 14, Christian Angulo, 14, teacher Richard Aspinwall, and teacher Christina Irimie. Nine others were injured during the attack.

In a joint statement from the FBI's Atlanta Field Office and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, authorities revealed that Colt Gray had been interviewed in May 2023 after anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting surfaced. These threats included photos of guns, which led to an FBI investigation that traced the posts to Georgia. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office interviewed the teen and his father, who admitted to owning guns but claimed his son had no unsupervised access to them.

At the time, there was insufficient evidence to justify an arrest, and no further action was taken.

The GBI emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing, asking for the public’s patience as they seek justice for the victims. Apart from this, taking to the official X handle, the GBI has also asked the people to stay vigilant.
