Prominent builder and head of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Canada’s Edmonton, Boota Singh Gill, was tragically killed on Monday after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
The fatal shooting occurred at a construction site associated with Gill’s business near the Millwood Rec Center in Alberta province. Maninder Singh Gill, managing director of Radio India, revealed that Sarabjeet Singh, a civil engineer also involved in the incident, is currently fighting for his life.
Maninder Singh Gill recounted that preliminary reports indicate three individuals were present at the construction site when a confrontation escalated, resulting in an Indian-origin construction worker allegedly shooting Boota Singh Gill and Sarabjeet Singh before taking his own life. The exact cause of the altercation remains under investigation.
Law enforcement officers responded to the crime scene located at Cavanagh Boulevard and 30 Avenue SW around noon, discovering two bodies at a residential construction site.
Boota Singh Gill had previously lodged police complaints regarding extortion calls and threats, occurring on multiple occasions. Authorities have initiated an investigation into these incidents, which also include reports of other builders in Edmonton facing threats and instances of newly constructed homes being set ablaze.
A media outlet reported that Edmonton police, in a January press conference, revealed a criminal network in India behind a string of extortions targeting home builders within the South Asian community in Edmonton. The criminal activities include five extortions, 15 arsons, and seven firearms offenses, all linked to a gang operating in India with local operatives.
