Shortly after departure, dense smoke entered the cabin of a Delta Airlines flight, forcing an emergency evacuation and an emergency landing.  After a similar event just two days prior, the plane that had left Atlanta had to return to the airport, which sparked further worries about the airline's safety record.

The incident happened Monday morning when Delta Flight 876, a Boeing 717 carrying 99 passengers and crew members, took off for South Carolina, according to a report by the New York Post.  The pilot decided to turn around after noticing smoke within the cabin a few minutes later, and at approximately 8:30 AM, they made a safe landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.  Emergency slides were used to quickly remove passengers once the aircraft touched down.

Recorded a dangerous scene

11Alive News posted footage of passengers protecting their noses in the smoke-filled cabin of the aircraft.  "We were being evacuated from the plane," said one passenger.  I captured every moment, including the fear, smoke, and escape.  Another traveler told CNN that the cabin started to fill with smoke within five to ten minutes after departure, which caused anxiety among the passengers.

Delta airlines reacts

The event was verified by a Delta representative, who said, "The flight crew followed established protocols and returned to Atlanta after smoke was observed inside the cabin."  We really regret this event and continue to prioritize the safety of our patrons and employees.  The airline also promised that an inquiry is being conducted to find out what caused the smoke.
Two days before to this emergency landing, another Delta airplane made an unplanned return.  In another instance, smoke found in the galley forced a jet headed for Australia to return to Los Angeles.  The airline's safety procedures have come under scrutiny as a result of these occurrences.
