Another 6.2 magnitude quake jolts Afghanistan, third in a week

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) says the earthquake of magnitude 6.2 on the Richter Scale jolted Afghanistan at 09:06:03 IST on Sunday.

The earthquake was followed by three major aftershocks with magnitude of 5.4, 4.3, and 4.2 on the Richter Scale on IST 09:26:34, 11:11:42, and 11:40:02, respectively.

Notably, this is the third major earthquake to strike Afghanistan in quick succession. It comes just a week after a strong earthquake in Herat province that claimed over 4,000 lives.

According to NCS, the earthquake is at a depth of 70 kilometers.

The NCS posted on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), “Earthquake of Magnitude:6.2, Occurred on 15-10-2023, 09:06:03 IST, Lat: 34.76 & Long: 62.02, Depth: 70 Km, Location: Afghanistan “.

After the second major jolt the NCS posted, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 5.4, Occurred on 15-10-2023, 09:26:34 IST, Lat: 34.24 & Long: 62.55, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Afghanistan”.

Earlier, an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 hit Afghanistan on October 13 followed by another earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale on October 11.

As per the reports from the Taliban-led ministry, the earthquake claimed more than 4,000 lives and destroyed thousands of residential houses, in the Herat province of Afghanistan, last week.

The Ministry of Disaster Management of Afghanistan has announced that 1,983 residential houses have also been destroyed in 20 villages in Herat on Saturday.
