France is witnessing a massive nationwide protest sparked after police shot a teenager to death. Amid the violent agitation, a video of the French President attending an Elton John concert has ignited anger online. According to media reports, hundreds of protesters have been arrested so far since a 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest by the police after driving away from the officers trying to pull him over. The following night of the incident, over 100 people were arrested and ranged fire on the streets of the country, meanwhile, President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte attended the British singer’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Paris.

A video from Elton John’s concert went viral on the internet, where President Macron was clearly seen enjoying and tapping his foot while the singer was performing on Saturday night, which has not become the talk of the town and has sparked aggression within the social media against him.

Taking it to Twitter, one of the users shared a short clip and wrote, “As protesters burn French cities, Macron lights up at Elton John concert in Paris. The President of France in these shots is in a great mood, he enjoys music with his wife and dances a little.”

In a post, Elton John and his husband David Furnish also shared a photo on Instagram showing them meeting the President and his wife. The caption read, “Backstage in Paris.”

Backlash from the netizens

Just after the video and post were shared on social media, surfaced all over the internet. Amid the ongoing tension, concerns about President Macron attending the concert on Wednesday have been raised. Speaking on the issue, an MEP for National Rally, Thierry Mariani said, “While France was on fire, Macron was not at the side of his minister of the interior or the police, but he preferred to applaud Elton John.”

The comment section of both posts was poured with backlash comments to the French president. One of the netizens wrote on Mr. Furnish’s post, “Wrong timing,” while another wrote, “Macron is below everything.”

“At the same time a child was killed by police under his government, he’s enjoying a show. Disgrace on Macron,” a user wrote.

President blames social media for igniting violence

According to the media, the French President has blamed social media for fueling violence and said that it had played a “significant role in the events of the past few days”.

President Macron added that he would try to get “the most sensitive types of content” removed, as well as ask the sites to reveal the identities of people who are promoting violence.
