Tensions flared at the Italian Parliament on Wednesday as lawmakers engaged in heated clashes over a proposed bill, a video of which circulated widely on the internet. The incident unfolded as Italy prepared to welcome world leaders for the annual Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Puglia.

Reports from various media outlets indicate that the bill under contention aimed to grant certain regions increased autonomy. However, opponents argued that such measures would exacerbate the north-south divide in the country, potentially worsening conditions for the impoverished southern regions.

What's in viral video?

The viral video captured the moment opposition party member Leonardo Donno attempted to present an Italian flag to Minister Roberto Calderoli. As Donno approached, Calderoli declined the tricolor flag and retreated. Within moments, chaos erupted in the lower chamber, with lawmakers pushing and throwing punches amidst the commotion.

G7 Countries

G7 includes America, Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan. Italy currently holds the presidency of the G7 (Group of Seven countries) and is hosting the summit. G-7 member states currently represent approximately 45% of global GDP and more than 10% of the world's population. In line with its tradition, representatives of many countries and international organizations are invited to the summit by the host country holding the presidency. Earlier between 1997 and 2013, it had expanded as G8 with the inclusion of Russia. However, after the occupation of Crimea, Russia's membership was suspended in 2014.
