New Delhi: A video circulating online has sparked outrage and ignited a heated debate on social media. The footage captures a disturbing conversation between a female passenger and her Uber driver in Canada.

Viral video shows driver making threatening remarks

The now-viral clip, shared on a popular social media platform X (formerly Twitter), features a conversation that takes a chilling turn. The driver, believed to be of Pakistani descent, tells the woman that "if they were in Pakistan, he would have kidnapped her." Reports suggest the incident occurred in Toronto.

Passenger questions driver's intent

The unsettling exchange unfolds when the driver comments, "If you were born in Pakistan...I'm from Pakistan,... you would have been kidnapped by now." The woman, visibly shocked, asks, "I would have been kidnapped by you?" The driver seemingly confirms his statement, replying, "Of course! Because there's no other option to get you, right? ... Since you are in Canada, I cannot say anything to you, I cannot touch you." As the conversation continues, the passenger expresses her discomfort, stating, "That is not flattery, that is kinda scary."

Social media divided on driver's intent

The video, uploaded on May 14, has amassed over 6 million views and ignited a firestorm on social media. While some users have demanded the driver's immediate suspension and deportation, others have come to his defense. The authenticity of the video has also been called into question, with accusations of potential editing and missing context.

Calls for action and defense of the driver

Several users have voiced strong condemnation. Comments range from "Arrest and Deport this creepy Pakistani immigrant" to "Whoa, that's seriously messed up. If that happened to me, I’d be reporting it to Uber and the cops ASAP."

However, some users have offered a different perspective. One comment suggests, "I feel like he's just preaching like what if, right before he said 'fun fact, it's so messed up where I'm from that..' cause dam. So much shit goes on there and we don’t EVER talk about it. It’s sad." Another user echoes this sentiment, stating, "Looks like he has broken English. He is trying to explain to her what could happen with her in Pakistan if she was out that late... we need to see the full video."

Passenger's demeanor raises further questions

Further complicating the situation, some users have pointed out that the passenger appears to laugh during the video and even thanks the driver before exiting the vehicle. This has led some to question whether the driver's remarks were perceived as a genuine threat.

The full context of the conversation and the driver's intentions remain unclear. However, the incident has undeniably sparked a crucial discussion about passenger safety and the importance of clear communication within ride-sharing services.
