A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025, with its epicenter 16 kilometers north-northwest of the Sagaing town. The earthquake was around 11:50 am IST and was later followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock minutes later.
The earthquake also hit neighboring Thailand, where a building site collapse in Bangkok has left 70 construction workers missing. According to the National Institute for Emergency Medicine, 20 workers are trapped in lift shafts, and about 320 workers were present on the site when the collapse occurred.
The US Embassy in Myanmar has provided safety advisories to its citizens in the country. In addition, the US Geological Survey says that nearly 800,000 people were caught in "violent" shaking as the earthquake occurred, which means thousands are feared dead.
The Indian embassy in Thailand has issued a helpline number, +66 618819218, for any Indian citizens who might require help. The embassy has confirmed that no Indian has been injured till now, and the whole embassy staff in Bangkok and consulate in Chiang Mai is safe.
At least three laborers were killed, and 81 people are trapped under the debris of a collapsed 30-storey building in Bangkok. The Thai capital city has been declared a disaster area, and the disaster response has been given to the Bangkok governor.
