4.5 magnitude earthquake strikes Nepal

The epicentre was located in the Chitlang area of Makwanpur district, about 44 miles south of the capital Kathmandu. The tremor hit at around 1:20 am local time.

This latest seismic activity comes as Nepal continues recovering from a devastating 6.4 magnitude quake that killed over 150 people on November 3. This devastating tremor impacted Kathmandu and parts of northern India.

In the aftermath, India swiftly deployed emergency relief aid and medical supplies to assist affected Nepali communities. This included shipments of essential medicines, relief materials and equipment based on requirements specified by Nepal's medical association.

India on Nepal’s recent earthquake

Over 34 tonnes of emergency aid has been transported across the border so far. India's speedy response aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Neighborhood First Policy,” which emphasises supporting neighbouring countries during crises.

“India has always stood in solidarity with the people of Nepal in times of need,” Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said earlier this month.

Nepal prone to earthquakes

While the latest 4.5 magnitude tremor seemed to cause minimal disruption compared to the prior devastating quake, Nepal remains prone to seismic activity due to its location along active fault lines in the Himalayas.

Since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 which killed over 9,000 people, the country has worked to improve emergency response capacities and build safety standards to boost resilience against strong quakes. But experts say Nepal faces an enduring vulnerability, underscoring the importance of preparedness and regional cooperation.
