World News: The discovery of 2,400 previously undisclosed documents reopens old wounds and reignites conspiracy theories, testing the government's commitment to transparency.
The FBI has recently uncovered approximately 2,400 secret records related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, documents that were never provided to the review board tasked with their disclosure. This revelation comes after President Donald Trump's executive order to declassify files related to the assassinations of JFK, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.. These long-hidden records are contained within 14,000 pages of documents. The White House was informed about this discovery by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence as part of their plan to release the assassination documents.
The emergence of these documents, 61 years after Kennedy's assassination, is poised to reignite numerous conspiracy theories. Experts suggest that the disclosed records are unlikely to definitively prove whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone or was part of a larger conspiracy. Jefferson Morley, from the Mary Ferrell Foundation, believes the discovery indicates the FBI is now taking the declassification order seriously. The original intent was that these documents would be handed over to the JFK Assassination Records Review Board and then to the National Archives, as outlined in the 1992 JFK Records Act.
Administration officials have acknowledged that the newly discovered records were neither submitted to nor vetted by the review board or the National Archives. Concerns have been raised that intelligence agencies continue to recommend redacting information, despite the President's orders. Some officials argue that full disclosure would compromise intelligence gathering methods. Trump had previously delayed the release of records based on the CIA's advice and reportedly regretted this decision. A Trump advisor suggested the records might unexpectedly appear online to fulfill the President's promise.
The Mary Ferrell Foundation filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration in 2022, alleging the existence of more assassination-related documents than those being handed over. These include jailhouse recordings of mobster Carlos Marcello and CIA files of George Joannides. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who Trump has considered for a position in his administration, has long advocated for the disclosure, believing in a broader conspiracy behind the assassinations
