Cargo ship with crew onboard sinks near Greek island; 13 missing, rescue underway

Authorities reported that the cargo ship was carrying 14 crew members and was loaded with salt.

A cargo ship carrying 14 people on board that has sunk near the island of Lesbos in gale-force winds as per the Greek coastguard statement on Sunday. 

As per coastguards, a navy helicopter rescued one crew member of the cargo ship, who has been taken to Lesbos General Hospital. Rescue operations have been initiated following the incident including five cargo ships, three coast guard vessels, air force and navy helicopters, and a navy frigate. 

Syrian, Egyptian, and Indian crew members on board

Authorities reported that the cargo ship was carrying 14 crew members and was loaded with salt. The ship was sailing from Dekheila, Egypt, heading for Istanbul as it went down 8.3 kilometers southwest of Lesbos early Sunday.

The ship's operating company in Lebanon based, confirmed by the crew members which includes two Syrian nationals, one Indian, and 11 Egyptians, quoted The Athens News Agency (ANA) in its reports. 

The ANA reports suggested that the ship is believed to have water due to strong waves which forced the ship to sink further. 

Dangerous weather phenomena

Earlier on Saturday, an emergency weather warning of "worsening weather" by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) was issued which was upgraded later to "dangerous weather phenomena", as Storm Oliver moved from the Adriatic Sea toward Greece.

Disastrous floods in Greece

Central Greece has faced repeated flooding over recent months after being hit by a series of storms. The country was devastated in September by disastrous amounts of rain dumped by Storm Daniel, destroying crops and killing thousands of farm animals across the country that is the heart of Greece's agricultural production.
