The Israeli military reported on Thursday that it conducted a lethal strike on a UN school in Gaza, claiming it housed a Hamas compound. The military stated that it targeted several "terrorists" within the compound, resulting in casualties. Hamas's media office confirmed the strike, alleging that it caused the deaths of at least 39 people and inflicted injuries on many others, condemning it as a "horrific massacre."

How conflict escalated?

The conflict escalated following Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7, leading to significant casualties on both sides. Israel's military actions, including airstrikes and ground offensives, resulted in a substantial number of civilian deaths in Gaza. This has led to increased international scrutiny and diplomatic isolation for Israel.

What US President Joe Biden said?

US President Joe Biden proposed a three-phase plan to cease hostilities and address humanitarian concerns in Gaza, which has garnered support from G7 powers and Arab states. However, Hamas's insistence on a permanent truce and complete Israeli withdrawal remains a significant obstacle to reaching a resolution.
