Bangladesh's Prime Advisor Muhammad Yunus has made a provocative claim that seven Indian states in the north eastern region are landlocked and do not enjoy any sea access. He made the remarks during his four-day China visit when he called on President Xi Jinping and inked nine agreements.

India's reaction to Yunus' remarks

Sanjeev Sanyal, who is a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Economy Advisory Council, has asked Yunus about the motive behind referring to India's northeast region. Sanyal asked what Yunus was doing in public to appeal to the Chinese on the grounds that seven Indian states were landlocked by land.

Yunus' pitch to China

Yunus has requested Chinese investment in Bangladesh and stressed that Beijing should be considered a good friend. Yunus has conceived Beijing as an alternative to New Delhi and hopes to elevate the bilateral relationship to a new stage.

Nine agreements signed between China and Bangladesh

China and Bangladesh have signed nine agreements, in which Chinese companies have been invited to participate in the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP).
