UK immigration laws: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has declared the recent immigration legislation in the United Kingdom as the "toughest" ever, vowing not to allow foreign courts to impede the government's efforts, particularly the Rwanda plan aimed at addressing illegal immigration.
Sunak took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to communicate his resolute stance. He emphasised the need to secure borders and put an end to illegal migration, asserting that the newly introduced bill marks the most robust anti-illegal immigration law to date.
The UK Prime Minister highlighted that the legislation ensures parliamentary control over immigration decisions, preventing criminal gangs or foreign courts from influencing the process. Sunak, acknowledging his immigrant background, stressed the importance of legal entry to the UK and the need to thwart criminal exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
Addressing the challenges faced in implementing the Rwanda policy, Sunak expressed determination to end the "legal merry-go-round." He announced the signing of a new treaty guaranteeing the safety of Rwanda in the context of immigration. Sunak affirmed his commitment to overcoming legal obstacles, stating, "I will not allow a foreign court to block these flights."
Sunak claimed that the government's measures are anticipated to result in a substantial reduction of approximately 300,000 in migration numbers. While acknowledging the benefits of migration for the UK, he underscored the importance of curbing system abuse and achieving sustainable levels.
In his post, Sunak outlined various measures employed by illegal migrants that the new law aims to block, including false asylum claims, misuse of modern slavery rules, questioning the safety of Rwanda, concerns about being sent to another country, and human rights claims.
The new law restricts overseas students from bringing their families to the UK (except those on postgraduate research degrees), prevents immigration from undercutting British workers, and eliminates the 20 per cent salary discounts offered for shortage occupations.
The UK government introduced the emergency legislation after the Supreme Court blocked the Rwanda plan, deeming it "unlawful." The plan involves relocating individuals identified as illegal immigrants or asylum seekers to Rwanda over a five-year period. The Conservative government, led by Sunak, is grappling with the deportation issue, and the recent immigration legislation has generated controversy, leading to the dismissal of key figures within the government.
As the debate over immigration intensifies, Sunak remains steadfast in implementing stringent measures to address illegal migration concerns.
