The Indian government has expressed serious concern over reports that members of the Indian community in Canada have been receiving extortion calls in recent months. The issue was highlighted during Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal's press conference on Thursday.

"We have taken note of the reports about Indian nationals receiving extortion calls in Canada. This is a matter of serious concern, and we are monitoring the situation closely," Jaiswal stated. He further acknowledged ongoing discussions with Canadian authorities on matters related to the Indian community, including a previous incident of temple vandalism in British Columbia. It was Jaiswal's maiden press conference as MEA spokesperson.

Jaiswal's comments come amidst media reports alleging a rise in extortion calls targeting Indian-owned businesses in Canada, particularly in British Columbia. Local authorities have reportedly established a task force to investigate these incidents, with at least nine cases currently under investigation.

Diplomatic conundrum between India and Canada

The news follows earlier tensions between India and Canada, with the MEA previously raising concerns about "space given to extremists and terrorists, and anti-India elements" within Canadian territory. The latest development involving the Indian community has further strained the relationship, prompting calls for stronger cooperation between the two nations to address security concerns.

The Indian government has assured its citizens in Canada that it is actively engaged with Canadian authorities and is utilising diplomatic channels to ensure their safety and well-being. Meanwhile, community leaders in Canada are urging members to come forward if they have been targeted by extortion attempts and to remain vigilant while authorities investigate the matter.
