China asserts claim over Arunachal: Following the inauguration of the world's tallest two-lane tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh by India, China has reiterated its claim over the region. The statement comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations over territorial disputes.

China's Assertion

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang stated that Xizang (China's term for Arunachal Pradesh) is an integral part of its southern Tibet province. He accused India of illegal occupation under the guise of Arunachal Pradesh.

India's Response

India's Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reaffirmed Arunachal Pradesh's status as Indian territory, emphasizing historical continuity and future sovereignty.

Background

China's move to rename areas in Arunachal Pradesh aims to challenge India's sovereignty and assert dominance over disputed territories. With a 22,000-km-long border shared with 14 countries, including India, China seeks control over Arunachal Pradesh.

Inauguration of the Tunnel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the double-tunnel, located at an altitude of 13,000 feet, on March 9. The tunnel aims to enhance all-weather connectivity to the strategically significant Tawang region of Arunachal Pradesh.

Strategic Significance

The tunnel, constructed at Sela with a budget of Rs 825 crore, provides a vital route for troop and weapon transportation to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

Tunnel Details

Under the Sela tunnel project, two separate tunnels were constructed. The first tunnel spans 980 meters, while the second, a two-lane tunnel, measures 1555 meters. This infrastructure enhancement includes a 1200-meter link road for streamlined connectivity.

Amidst geopolitical tensions, India's infrastructure development in Arunachal Pradesh stands as a strategic response to China's territorial claims. The inauguration of the tunnel underscores India's commitment to bolstering connectivity and reinforcing sovereignty in the region.
