'Horror must stop,' UN chief denounces Israeli strike in Rafah

The Israeli attack in Rafah was denounced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who said that the bombing "killed scores of innocent civilians who were only seeking shelter from this deadly conflict." He called Gaza a dangerous place and declared that the "horror must stop."

 "I condemn Israel's actions which killed scores of innocent civilians who were only seeking shelter from this deadly conflict," wrote Guterres in a post on X. Gaza does not have a safe area. This horror must stop."

According to the government media office in Gaza, an Israeli strike on a camp housing displaced persons resulted in at least 45 deaths and 200 injuries, as per sources.

Not only this, just after the attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that two senior Hamas officials had been killed after targeting a Hamas compound. The Israeli attack followed Hamas' first rocket attack on the Israeli city of Tel Aviv in months.

UN condemned the attack

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk on Monday voiced his horror at the further loss of civilian life in Gaza, after Israeli air strikes on Sunday hit a camp for displaced people in the southern city of Rafah. He said, "The images from the camp are horrific and point to no apparent change in the methods and means of warfare used by Israel that have already led to so many civilian deaths," said Türk. "Sunday's strike underscores once again that there is literally no safe place in Gaza."

Here’s what Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the Israeli strike on a camp for displace people in Rafah a 'tragic mistake'. Referring the attack he said, “We are investigating case.” 

Netanyahu stated, "Despite our best effort, not to harm those not involved, unfortunately a tragic mistake happened last night," during his speech to the Israeli Knesset on Monday.

Meanwhile, Israel Defense Forces in an operational update on its X handle said that the incident is under review.
