There's been a new political commotion in Pakistan, where the junior officers of the Pakistani Army have sounded the bugle of revolt against their Army Chief General Asim Munir. These officers, in a letter, have asked for the resignation of General Munir, and threatened to face the consequences if he fails to resign. The letter also informs him that his time is up and he should not be put in a situation like 1971.
Junior officers have blamed Gen Munir for employing the army as a tool of political vendetta and personal persecution. The letter also refers to the violent crackdown on the government of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, the quelling of democratic forces, and the turmoil in the 2024 elections. In addition to this, he also remembered that the defeat of Pakistan in 1971 and the formation of Bangladesh was fresh from memory, and this time he would not allow Munir to do the same.
The uprising has intensified the political climate in Pakistan. The army plays a dominant role in politics, and governments function on the instructions of the army. Since junior army officers have now openly spoken against Munir, it can be a challenge for the Shahbaz government as well. This division in the army can influence the future political climate of Pakistan.
