Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took a jab at Donald Trump's claim that he could end the war with Russia in 24 hours. Zelenskyy invited the former United States' president, a front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, to visit Kyiv—on one condition.

In an interview broadcasted Friday, Zelenskyy, while expressing skepticism about Trump's solution, said, "Donald Trump, I invite you to Ukraine, to Kyiv. If you can stop the war during 24 hours, I think it will be enough to come."

It is being speculated that the Ukrainian leader's skepticism is rooted in two factors. The first is the lack of details surrounding Trump's "peace plan" and, secondly, his history of unilateral foreign policy decisions.

"He is going to make decisions on his own, without... I'm not even talking about Russia, but without both sides, without us," Zelenskyy said. "If he says this publicly, that's a little scary. I've seen a lot, a lot of victims, but that's really making me a bit stressed."

"Because even if his idea (for ending the war)—that no one has heard yet—doesn't work for us, for our people, he will do anything to implement his idea anyway. And this worries me a little," Zelenskyy added.

What did Donald Trump claim?

On the other hand, Trump has repeatedly insisted that he can successfully negotiate an end to the war that has raged for almost two years. The former president also claimed that he has a good relationship with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders. He has frequently praised, throughout his career, Russian President Vladimir Putin, including Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Just days after Russian tanks moved into Ukraine, at a campaign rally in Georgia, Trump described Putin as a 'smart' political player and expressed admiration for Russia's takeover of a vast, 'great piece of land'.

What were accusitions on Donald Trump?

The United States House of Representatives accused Trump during his tenure as president, alleging that he pressured Zelenskyy to launch a politically motivated probe that had the potential to hurt Joe Biden’s chance to win the 2020 presidential election. The Congress approved helping Ukraine confront Russian-backed separatists by withholding $400 million in military aid.

It remains to be seen whether Trump will accept Zelenskyy's conditional invitation or whether he can provide concrete details about his proposed "peace plan."
