Viduthalai is a gripping two-part franchise that delves into complex themes of duty, morality, and resistance within a turbulent political and social landscape. Based on Jeyamohan's short story Thunaivan, the narrative is set in 1987 in a fictional town where the newly recruited constable Kumaresan finds himself in a moral dilemma.

Kumaresan is tasked with arresting Perumal, the leader of the Makkal Padai, a local activist group. Perumal's political activism is causing unrest, and the authorities are determined to capture him. As Kumaresan becomes involved, the plot thickens when the police department launches a brutal operation to apprehend the activist. This operation, however, quickly becomes violent and unjust, putting Kumaresan in a difficult position. On one hand, he is bound by his duty as a constable, which requires him to follow orders and maintain law and order.
