Veteran actor Satinder Kumar Khosla, popularly known as Birbal died on Tuesday evening. The actor who was in his 80s died due to cardiac arrest and breathed his last at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, his friend Jugnu confirmed.

Khosla is famous for his comic roles in films which usually feature a distinctive with a bald pate and a thick moustache. In this outlook, he was easily recognised by his fans.

He appeared in a lot of movies spanning not just Hindi but also Punjabi, Bhojpuri, and Marathi cinema and worked on several films with Manoj Kumar including Upkar, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan and Kranti. Throughout his illustrious career, he appeared in more than 500 films, reports suggest.

However, his most iconic and well-remembered role was that of a prisoner in Sholay which made him garner a lot of attention.

Birbal made his debut in the world of Hindi cinema with Manoj Kumar’s film “Upkar” in 1967 which was Kumar’s directorial debut.  It was the highest-grossing movie of the year.

He also featured in films like NaseebYaaranaHum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and Anjaam.

After making his debut with Manoj Kumar’s Upkar, Birbal went on to do many films over five decades of his life which mostly comprised supporting comedic roles.

In his debut movie, Birbal played the role of a barber who is talkative and clumsy but also works hard for a living. His scene in this movie starts with injuring his customer while shaving his beard who tries to avoid paying money to Birbal.

Also in the blockbuster movie Sholay, he played the role of a prisoner with a half moustache in the scene where Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra end up in jail.

He also played the role of a clumsy, forgetful mechanic in Anurodh (1977) or that of a business and profit-minded pharmacist in Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974).
