Indian television actor Bhupinder Singh has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting one man dead and injuring three others during a property dispute in northern India's Bijnor area.

The 54-year-old actor is known for shows like ‘Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam’, ‘Ek Haseena Thi’, 'Madhubala –Ek Ishq Ek Junoon’, ‘Rishton Ka Chakravyuh’ and ‘Tere Sheher Mein’, among many others.

The incident is said to have stemmed from an argument over the felling of trees with a neighbour named Gurdeep Singh.

Gurdeep's 23-year-old son Govind was killed, while Gurdeep, his wife Meera, and elder son Amrik were seriously wounded in the shooting Saturday evening in the village of Kuan Khera.

Local authorities said Singh and his associates fired over 10 rounds from licensed and unlicensed firearms toward the family. The victims are hospitalised and are now in critical condition.

Details on the incident

Villagers accused police of ignoring earlier complaints lodged by Gurdeep regarding tensions with the TV actor over eucalyptus trees bordering their properties.

Area police superintendent Muniraj Giri said two alleged shooters have been arrested so far, with searches underway for two others involved. He pledged a full investigation, including into any negligence by local officers.

That probe led to the suspension of three Badhapur police officials for apparent inaction over the escalating dispute. Komal Singh has been appointed the new station chief.

The fatal shooting sparked tensions in Kuan Khera. Govind’s funeral rites were carried out by his sister Sukhwinder Kaur, as a still-hospitalised family couldn’t attend.

The case highlights India’s lax gun laws. Obtaining firearm licenses from authorities is relatively easy, allowing incidents like this weekend’s deadly neighbourhood quarrel to spiral out of control. Calls for strengthened restrictions will likely follow.
