The US Coast Guard and OceanGate, the firm that owned Titan submarine, has announced that five individuals who were aboard the submersible that went missing while travelling to Titanic wreckage, have died after the vessel had a ‘catastrophic implosion.’

The massive search came to an end for the submersible travelling to Titanic wreckage that was lost on June 18.

Rear Admiral John Mauger of the United States Coast Guard stated that the Titan was located around 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic wreck.

Here’s what James Cameron said

James Cameron, a veteran film director, has responded to the deaths of five people who were aboard the submersible Titan, which was destroyed in a implosion while making an exploration dive into the Titanic debris.

As a seasoned diver with 33 expeditions to the Titanic under his name, Cameron shared his thoughts on the catastrophe in an interview with ABC News.

“Many people in the (deep-submergence engineering) community were very concerned about this sub, and a number of you know of the top players in the community even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and needed to be certified and so on. I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night. And many people died as a result,” Cameron said.

He added, “And for a very similar tragedy, where warnings went unheeded to take place at the same site, with all the diving that’s going on all around the world. I think it’s just astonishing. It’s quite surreal.”

The US Coast Guard, in a press meet, shared said that all five individuals on board the submersible, known as the ‘Titan,’ were killed. According to CNN, a remotely operated vehicle located the tail cone and other pieces of the missing submersible around 1,600 feet from the Titanic’s bow, which is located about 13,000 feet beneath the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Meanwhile, Cameron also expressed the safety concerns raised by the experts over the ‘Titan’ submersible. He also added that one of his friends, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, is among one of the victims.

When did Titanic perish?

Titanic perished after colliding with an iceberg, killing roughly 1,500 passengers and crew in April 1912. When the debris was discovered in 1985, diving enthusiast Cameron was inspired to make a movie out of it named – Titanic.
