Thought would be great: Karan Johar on casting Jaya as ‘nasty character’

Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani (RARKPK) has become one of the best rom-com movies of 2023, starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra and more. This movie has created a buzz on the internet since its release, whether in songs, action or character. But, recently a fan has accused the makers of casting veteran action Jaya Bachchan as a ‘nasty character.’ So, here’s Karan Johar’s response. Yes! He responds to the fan in an interaction with Indian Express. The famous Bollywood director replied that he cast Jaya ‘against type’ to shake things up.

Now, looking deep into fan’s accusations, he claimed to love the film, but added to hold a grudge against Karan Johar for casting Jaya as ‘Dhanalaxmi Randhawa.’ 

Responding to the fan, the maker then said, “Sir, it was actually to cast against type. She has such a wonderful image on and off the screen. She is a mother figure to me. So, when I wanted to cast against type, I thought it would be a great role for her to go against what she has done. She is like a goody-goody. That was her personality on celluloid. So, sometimes it is nice to shake things up.”

With this movie, actress Jaya Bachchan made her switch to the greyer side of celluloid. Before RARKPK, she always played the role of the traditionally perfect girl or woman in all her films. This 2023 film is the only which she opted to do a negative role. Notably, Jaya Bachchan plays Dharmendra’s wife in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

Meanwhile, Karan Johar’s directorial film earned ₹300 crore at the worldwide box office, and the Indian box office collection stood at ₹140 crore in just three weeks.
