Entertainment News: Sridevi, a cinematic icon, shattered salary ceilings in the 1990s, becoming the first female actor to command ₹1 crore per film, surpassing even the top male stars of the time. Long before the Khans ruled Bollywood's box office with their crore-plus paychecks, there was Sridevi, the undisputed "Female Bachchan," who not only achieved this financial milestone first but often out-earned her male co-stars, setting a new precedent for female actors in the Indian film industry.

The First Crorepati Actress

Sridevi, was the first Indian actress to charge ₹1 crore per film136. She reportedly commanded this fee for the 1993 film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, one of the most expensive Indian films of its time. This achievement placed her in an elite club, as only Chiranjeevi had reached this milestone before her. Even more impressively, Sridevi often earned more than her male counterparts, including the Khans (Shah Rukh, Salman, and Aamir), who were paid between ₹50-75 lakh during the mid-90s.

Reign as the 'Female Bachchan'

Sridevi's rise to superstardom began in the 1980s with hits like Himmatwala, Sadma, and Nagina, establishing her as a leading actress in the industry. By 1987, she was commanding ₹1.1 million for Mr. India, making her the highest-paid Indian actress. Her success continued with Chandni in 1989, further solidifying her position as a top female star. Her versatility as an actress was evident in her comedic roles, like in Mr. India, and her ability to captivate audiences with her dance numbers, such as "Hawaa Hawaai". She was also paid ₹1 crore for Judaai.

Shocking Retirement and Lasting Legacy

At the peak of her career, Sridevi shocked the industry by announcing her retirement in 1996, at the age of 33, due to her pregnancy. Her last film before her hiatus was Judaai in 1997. Despite her relatively short career, Sridevi left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. She was known for her range as an actor, her comedic abilities, and her dancing skills. Sridevi was also known as the "Female Bachchan," and her impact is still felt today. She made a comeback in 2012 with English Vinglish and starred in Puli (2015) and Mom (2017) before her death in 2018.
