Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, in an interview on Wednesday, opened up about her casting couch experience, where a ‘big producer’ asked her to spend the night with him in a hotel room.

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi is best known for her role in the 1994 hit ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’, where she starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

Speaking with YouTuber Siddharth Kannan, Krishnamoorthi said that producers inviting people for meetings in hotel rooms were ‘quite common’ back in the day. She said that a ‘big producer’, whose identity she did not disclose, invited her to a hotel room, and asked her to tell her father that she will be spending the night at the hotel.

“I met this producer-director and he asked me, ‘Who are you closer with, your mommy or daddy?’ So he called me into his hotel [room]. In those days, everybody used to call in the hotel room, it was quite common. I went and said, ‘I am very close to my daddy.’ He said, ‘That’s very good. Is your daddy nice?’ I said, ‘Yes, he is very nice, he loves me a lot.’ Then he said to me, ‘Call you daddy and tell him that I will drop you home tomorrow morning.’ Such things were very common back then,” she told Siddharth Kannan.

I was on the verge of tears, ran away: Suchitra Krishnamoorthi

In the interview, Krishnamoorthi opened up about her reaction to the shocking remark by the producer, saying that she was on the verge of tears and had to run away from the scene.

“I was almost on the verge of tears and I picked up all my stuff and I said ‘I am just coming sir’. And then I ran away. First I didn’t understand what he was saying. You know it takes you a while to process. Then I was like it’s 4-5 pm right now. What am I going to do with him till tomorrow morning? Then it started striking me [as to] what he is probably intending. But such things used to happen a lot,” Krishnamoorthi said.

However, Krishnamoorthi was optimistic about the present situation of the film industry, saying that the visibility provided by social media acts as a deterrent.

“Now I think the film industry is much more organised and disciplined and also there’s social media. If somebody does something rubbish like that, then with just one tweet, you expose them. It is a good fear,” she said.

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, who made his debut in the TV series Chunauti in 1987, was last seen in the 2019 film ‘Odd Couple’ opposite Divyenndu, Vijay Raaz, Manoj Pahwa, and others.
