Indian singer Shankar Mahadevan, a part of the famed Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio, was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by Birmingham City University (BCU) for his outstanding contributions to music and the arts on Friday. I would like to thank Birmingham City University and all the people who decided to confer this legendary, honourable doctorate on me,” said Mahadevan.The Indian singer said that the award will motivate him to create even music for his songs. “All I can say is that this is an occasion which tells that I need to work even harder, come up with even more beautiful songs and spread the joy of music which is Indian classical music all around the world,” he said.Ceremony marked by Shankar Mahadevan songs by studentsThe students of Birmingham City University honoured Shankar Mahadevan by performing his songs in the ceremony. Songs such as Mitwa were performed, and the students were joined by the guests tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain and guitarist John McLaughlin. Mahadevan too joined in the fun, performing Breathless in front of the audience.Shankar Mahadevan, who was also conferred the Padma Shri Award in 2019 for his contributions to Film Music, has sung over 7000 songs in a career spanning almost three decades.
