Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith has stepped down from his position as chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy following serious harassment allegations made by Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra. Mitra recently accused Ranjith of making unwelcome advances towards her during the pre-production phase of a film in 2009.Reacting to the allegations, Ranjith stated, Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra has levelled very serious personal accusations against me. This has been ongoing for a while. Since I assumed the role of chairman at Kerala Chalachitra Academy, a group has been trying to discredit me. The timing of these allegations [by Sreelekha] is a direct result of this.”Ranjith further expressed his concern about the impact on his reputation. This has tarnished my name. Its difficult, but I must prove these allegations are false. What she said is either entirely false or partially so. Her statements have been inconsistent. Although I wont delve into the specifics, I have decided to pursue legal action to uncover the truth.”The controversy gained momentum when the Communist Party of India (CPI), a key member of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), called for an investigation into Mitras claims, which resurfaced in light of the findings of the Justice Hema Committee. In an interview with PTI, Mitra detailed her experience, explaining that Ranjith, a prominent figure in the Malayalam film industry and a national award-winning director, made subtle advances during a meeting at his residence to discuss a film project. Despite expressing her discomfort, Ranjith continued his behaviour, prompting her to withdraw from the project and return to Kolkata the following day.Mitra also expressed her uncertainty about whether other female actors in the industry had faced similar situations, noting that it was up to them to speak out. She acknowledged the courage of women coming forward today to share their stories, emphasising the need for continued advocacy against gender-based misconduct. The allegations against Ranjith have sparked widespread outrage, with prominent voices in Kerala, including filmmaker Dr. Biju, demanding his resignation. The controversy arises amidst ongoing scrutiny of the Malayalam film industry, particularly following the Justice Hema Committees report, which exposed widespread instances of casting couch practices, sexual abuse, and pay disparities.
