Slug: Oscars Academy has released a list of people it has invited to become members, and it includes more than a dozen Indian celebrities.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hosts the Oscars, has extended the invitation to 398 new members. This list features Indian stars such as Ram Charan, Jr NTR, Mani Ratnam, and Karan Johar, among others.

The invitations were revealed in a statement by the Academy, which said that the new members were selected “based on professional qualifications, with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion and equity.”

“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership. They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines, and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang.

RRR stars dominate Oscars new members list; dozens other feature

The new membership invitee list heavily features the stars from the breakout hit RRR, which won an Oscar for Best Original Song for its song ‘Naatu Naatu’. The film’s heroes, Ram Charan and Jr NTR, feature on the list, as do Naatu-fame lyricist Chandrabose, cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar, and production designer Sabu Cyril.

Other invitees include film-makers Karan Johar and Mani Ratnam. Other Indian invitees include Shaunak Sen, director of the Oscar-nominated ‘All That Breathes’ documentary; Siddharth Roy Kapoor, producer of India’s 2023 Oscar entry ‘Chhello Show’; and Chaitanya Tamhane, director of India’s 2016 Oscar entry ‘Court’.

This year’s new members list highlights the Academy’s efforts in trying to diversify its members list as a part of its drive to recognise and amplify the communities who have been under-represented in films. The list features people from the US and 51 other countries.
