Pamela Chopra, 74, passed away in Mumbai this morning. She was the wife of renowned filmmaker Yash Chopra. According to the reports, Pamela Chopra was being treated for Pneumonia for the past few days at the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.

The news of her demise was shared through the official Twitter media handle of Yah Raj Films. The post read, “With heavy hearts, the Chopra family would like to inform you that Pamela Chopra, 74, passed away this morning. Her cremation took place at 11 am today in Mumbai. We are grateful for your prayers and the family would like to request privacy in this moment of deep sadness and reflection.”

She was often referred to as Yash Chopra’s ‘muse’ by the people of film fraternity. She actively participated in her husband’s creative endeavours. Recently, she was featured in the Netflix documentary ‘The Romantics’ where she discussed her husband’s style of filmmaking and how the Yash Raj studio changed over time.

Yash Chopra and Pamela got married in 1970 and were blessed with two sons. She was mother to Aditya Chopra, producer and actor-producer Uday Chopra who are well-known names in the Bollywood industry. Pamela was also mother-in-law of actress Rani Mukerji.

Pamela had a melodious voice and contributed to several of Yash Chopra’s movies. ‘Main Sasural Nahi Jaungi’ from the film ‘Chandni’ and ‘Ghar Aaja Pardesi’ from ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ are two of her well-known songs.

Pamela was also acknowledged as the designer for the movie ‘Silsila’ and penned the script for Amitabh Bachchan and Rakhee-starrer ‘Kabhi Kabhie.’

The late filmmaker frequently discussed her wife’s creative contributions to his works in interviews. In the song ‘Ek Duje Ke Vaaste’ from the film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai,’ the pair are featured. She even worked on independent film production.

As per media sources, Yash Chopra separated from his brother BR Chopra who was a renowned name in the movies since the 1950s, to start his banner in 1973, called ‘Yash Raj Films’. After stepping out of his brother’s shadow, he produced the movie ‘Daag.’

During an interview in 1995, Pamela disclosed that she had a feeling that she was the reason for the separation of two brothers. “Although everyone kept telling me not to blame myself. But there was always a feeling that I was not welcomed in the family.” “But Yash stood by me”, she further added.

She also disclosed, although the brothers’ parted ways but her husband was entirely ‘indebted’ to his sibling. “He was wholly in awe of his brother and owed him to the very end. Nothing existed between him and his brother. Sadly, the sister-in-law, who was B R Chopra’s wife, was not pleased with what had transpired and the fact that he had walked out. Additionally, the son, Ravi Chopra was disturbed, she claimed.

Pamela was worried about her sons

According to the sources, Pamela once during an interview expressed her worry about both of her sons, but for various reasons. She also expressed dismay at how busy her late husband was and how he rarely had time for them. “The only thing that would make me unhappy is if he missed the kids’ birthdays since they were so fond of him. Adi would be dissatisfied. One or two times,” she remarked.

When asked whether Aditya is a shy person, she responded, ‘No, he is simply media shy’. She further said, ‘Yash was a unique individual. His PR was excellent. He would do everything for someone he loves because he would be loyal to them for the rest of his life. He would never communicate with someone he didn’t like. He had very strong preferences. But he excelled in a professional setting. He was aware that he shouldn’t express his displeasure or exhibit emotion.” She further informed, “I used to ask Aditya, how will you manage if we are gone? We have so many pals and such a great network of connections and money can buy anything,” he used to answer.
