Renowned Pakistani singer Ali Sethi, known for his hit songs ‘Pasoori’ and ‘Left Right’, has reportedly married artist Salman Toor in a private ceremony held in New York City, media reports said on Friday.

The rumoured couple have reportedly decided to tie the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony, which has added an element of intrigue to their union, leaving fans and followers eager for glimpses of the event.

Salman Toor, a Pakistani-American artist and a longtime close friend of Ali Sethi, captured hearts with his artistic prowess. The two first crossed paths during an art class at Aitchison College and have maintained a strong bond ever since.

As the focus shifts towards Salman Toor, many netizens were curious about the artist who has reportedly captured Ali Sethi’s heart.

With a distinctive visual language and a reputation for his art resonating with enthusiasts worldwide, Toor’s creative mastery adds another layer of fascination to this unfolding story. In several of his paintings, Toor has subtly expressed his admiration for his now-rumoured husband.

Little concrete details about the speculated wedding can be found on social media, and neither Ali Sethi nor Salman Toor has confirmed the news.

Ali Sethi, Salman Toor discuss being queer in Pakistan

In a recent interview, Ali Sethi discussed his experience as a queer individual in Pakistan, acknowledging the challenges he has encountered in his career. He also emphasised the importance of visibility for LGBTQ individuals in the country.

“There’s a lot of homophobia in Pakistan, and it’s getting worse. I’m one of the only out queer people in the public eye, so I feel a responsibility to be visible. I want people to know that we exist, and we’re just like them,” he said.

Salman Toor, too, has been candid about his sexual identity. He disclosed to the news outlet The New Yorker in 2022 that he attempted to come out to his parents at the age of 15. “They didn’t accept that,” he said.

Though his parents initially struggled to accept his revelation, they eventually came to terms with his sexuality ‘more with tolerance than with understanding’.

In the same interview, Salman Toor spoke about Ali Sethi, expressing a profound connection, saying, “I knew I had found the person I wanted to be with for good.”

However, homosexuality is illegal in Pakistan, and the Pakistani Penal Code of 1860, enacted during the British colonial period, criminalises same-sex activities with potential prison sentences ranging from two years to a life term, along with fines.

Following news of the rumoured wedding, #AliSethi, #NajamSethi, #Pasoori, and #LBGTQ+ hashtags trended on the social media platform X in Pakistan, sparking passionate and mixed reactions. The developments ignited a wide range of reactions, with some conservative and orthodox voices expressing dismay while others congratulated Ali Sethi and his father, Najam Sethi.

On one hand, liberal activists in Pakistan congratulated Ali Sethi’s father Najam for ‘raising a brave son’; meanwhile, many people filled the social media platform with homophobic comments.

Ali Sethi’s music has resonated deeply with audiences, with songs like ‘Chandni Raat’, ‘Chan Kithan’, and ‘Dil Ki Khair’ receiving widespread acclaim.
