The 96th Academy Awards nominees have been announced, and there are two notable omissions from the list: Margot Robbie, who starred in Barbie, and Greta Gerwig, who directed the film. In addition to these noteworthy exclusions, Leonardo DiCaprio, star of Killers of the Flower Moon, did not receive a nomination for Best Actor. But Oppenheimer found itself on top of the world as it topped the list with over thirteen nominations, followed by Poor Things with ten and Killers of the Flower Moon (minus the male lead) with eleven. Lily Gladstone, Leonardo's co-star, will be up for an Oscar. Earlier this year, Gladstone became the first indigenous actress to win a Golden Globe.

More on the categories

America Ferrera was listed as a candidate for Best Supporting Actress. Ryan Gosling received two nominations: one for Best Original Song and one for Best Supporting Actor. He also performed the song "I'm Just Ken."

Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt received the predicted Oppenheimer acting nods for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress; the first two went on to win Golden Globes in their respective categories. Diversity Criteria!

The Academy, which presents the Oscars, implemented a diversity criteria for Best Picture nominees starting this year. In order to compete in this category, a film must fulfil at least two of the four "representation and inclusion standards." The goal of the regulation is to boost the representation of historically underrepresented communities on screen and, consequently, their employment, including women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and racial, ethnic, and disability groups. The actors Jack Quaid and Zazie Beetz announced the Oscar nominees.

Kimmel retuns!

Jimmy Kimmel will return as host of the award presentation for the fourth time; he previously hosted the awards in 2023, 2018, and 2017.
