Dev Kohli, a seasoned lyricist for Hindi films, passed away early on Saturday in Mumbai. Popularly known for his work on Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, starringSalman Khanand Bhagyashree, Kohli had penned over 100 songs for various Hindi movies. The songs became quite well-known soon after. Additionally, he contributed songs to the Abbas-Mustan-directed films ‘Baazigar’, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Shilpa Shetty, and ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun’, starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit.

Official statement

Pritam Sharma, Dev Kohli’s spokesperson, quoted, “Kohli ji was admitted at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital for the last few months, he was not keeping well and passed away in his sleep early, on Saturday morning.”

Early life

After the partition, Kohli, moved to India with his family. He made his acting debut in 1969 with Gunda. However, it wasn’t until much later that his song ‘Geet Gaata Hoon Main’ from the 1971 film ‘Laal Patthar’ became a big hit that brought people’s attention to his work.’ Kohli wrote several popular songs throughout the 1990s. He worked with musicians like Anu Malik, Raam Laxman, Anand Raaj Aanand, and Anand Milind during his career. 

Connecting millennials and Gen-z

In his entire life, Kohli had been writing songs that managed to attract people of all ages across the length and breadth of the country. While he wrote songs for films like ‘Gunda’ (1969), he hit the limelight after he worked for ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ and ‘Baazigar’. He also penned down popular songs like ‘o saki saki’ and ‘chalti hai kya nau se bara’. His other written compositions feature ‘aaja sham hone aayi’, ‘yeh kaali kaali aankhen, ‘didi tera devar deewana’, ‘hum saath saath hain’, ‘jaane kya hoga rama re’, ‘oonchi hai building’ and many more.

The last ride

According to reports, Kohli’s remains will be delivered to his home in Lokhandwala, Mumbai this evening. After this his funeral will take place at the Oshiwara Crematorium.
