Entertainment News: India has officially chosen Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies as its entry for the Best Foreign Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, the film tackles significant social themes like gender equality and women’s empowerment, set against the backdrop of rural India.

The story revolves around two brides who are mistakenly switched during a train journey in 2001, leading to a series of humorous and touching events. The lead roles are portrayed by Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, and Nitanshi Goel. The film, which released in March 2024, also features well-known actors like Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma, adding depth to its diverse cast.

The film was showcased at a special screening at the Supreme Court of India, where Kiran Rao expressed her gratitude for the event’s success and the wider audience reach. She stated, "I am deeply honored and delighted that Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team."

Ravi Kishan, who plays a witty police inspector in the film, shared his joy over the Oscar selection. "For the first time in my 34-year career, a film I worked in is going to the Oscars," he said, adding that the film highlights the progress of rural India and the courage of women fighting for their dreams. The 97th Academy Awards ceremony is set for March 2, 2025, with nominations announced on January 17, 2025. India now waits in anticipation for the shortlist reveal on December 17.
