Bollywood actor Sunny Deol spoke of his happiness over the triumphant box-office performance of his recent release, ‘Gadar 2’, during a special screening of the film in London.

The special screening was organised by the Indian High Commission in London and the Nehru Centre’s cultural wing.

The Vue cinema at Leicester Square, where the screening was held, was brimming with diplomats, community leaders, and artistic personalities, including renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor.

The event kicked off with the vibrant beats of the dhol, as Sunny Deol made a striking entrance before addressing the captivated audience.

Taking the stage, Deol said, “Indians all over the world are celebrating this film, I can’t tell you how beautiful it is. I never expected it to be what it was, what it is right now.”

Deol reprised his iconic role of Tara Singh from the 2001 blockbuster ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’, alongside Ameesha Patel as Sakeena.

“I believe that every man wants his wife to be like Sakeena and every woman wants her husband to be like Tara Singh. And, the family, the way they hold on together and fight off everything, that’s the basic USP [unique selling point] of the story,” Deol continued.

Revealing his initial apprehensions about undertaking a sequel to a cinematic gem from 22 years ago, Deol disclosed that the idea solidified during the COVID pandemic lockdown, saying that ‘it clicked straight away’.

The crowd roared when Deol said his iconic ‘Hindus zindabad tha…’ line from the film.

‘Gadar 2’ reminds us of independence struggle, Partition cost: Indian diplomat

The event was attended by several high-profile diplomats, including the Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami.

“It should remind us again of what our previous generations went through in the struggle for independence and most importantly what cost all communities paid in Partition,” Doraiswami said.

“The story of the original ‘Gadar’ is based on a true story, which Sunny Sahib made a giant hit of its times. This is an opportunity to see the next edition of it.”

Doraiswami disclosed how the special screening materialised at very short notice, spurred by the lead actor’s request. Deol’s stature proved to be a ‘draw card’, ensuring the substantial attendance that packed one of Leicester Square’s expansive screens.
