Teachers play a vital role in shaping anyone’s life. It is said that after parents, teachers are the people who contribute to an individual’s success in life. Having said that, it would not be an exaggeration to state that this student-teacher relationship does not get that limelight in real life as compared to the reel life.
Bollywood can be credited to have depicted this relationship from time to time. There are many films that remind of school and college days and successfully portray different kinds of teachers. Let’s look at some of them:
Parichay needs not any ‘parichay’! The film depicts a teacher’s relationship with students and their parents in a very sensitive manner. The film features Ravi (Jeetendra) who takes the responsibility of teaching five children. Rama (Jaya Bachchan), the eldest of the five children, does a lot of mischief along with her siblings. Ravi not only teaches them but also work on their inter-personal relationships. It is a must watch film today if someone has not seen the movie.
This film is the story of a child who is a victim of dyslexia. Instead of understanding him and his issue, his parents put pressure on him and then one day put him in a hostel. Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan), the substitute art teacher who comes to the school, gets to know about his problem. When all the teachers have given up, Ram Shankar takes the responsibility of teaching Ishaan. Ishaan improves and excels in his studies.
Nowadays, there is a race for excellence even in schools. This film showcases the same. The film features Veeru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani) who is a strict college principal and is adamant on students getting their degrees excelling in competitions. The film also has a Rancho (Aamir Khan), Raju (Sharman Joshi) and Farhan (R. Madhavan), three friends who decide to see out of the box and even succeed in changing their principal’s mindset.
This film has Rishi Kapoor playing an honest teacher who refuses to accept bribes. Just for the sake of fulfilling his children’s demands, he once tries to accept bribe but his heart does not permit him.
While there were many films that depicted issues related to children, there are fewer that talk about teachers’ struggle. In Hichki, Naina Mathur, played by Rani Mukerji, aspires to be a teacher but suffers from a rare nerve disorder called Tourette’s syndrome, which causes her to have frequent hiccups. This makes her a laughingstock among the children. Naina succeeds in helping those children and by teaching them well, she becomes an ideal teacher and achieves her said goal.
