Nostalgia is in the air, as Sunny Deol’s actioner ‘Gadar 2‘ minted ₹ 8.2 crores on Thursday. The film is looking to reach a grand total of ₹500 crore. The sequel had its eyes on Independence Week for big numbers, but what came out of the blue for its competitor, ‘OMG 2, was the nostalgia that swooped the audience head over heels at cinemas. While the Akshay Kumar starrer had steady growth at the box office, Sunny’s Gadar 2 turned out to be an instant box-office ragger.

The numbers speak for themselves

Despite a slowdown from its first week, the movie continues to have the best single-day figures out of all the movies now showing in theaters. According to estimates published by Sacnilk.com, it brought in ₹8.2 crore on Thursday. Bringing the total to 419.10 crore now.

‘Gadar 2’ opened on August 11 at a cost of ₹40 crore and made a total of ₹284.63 crore in its first week. On Independence Day, it earned ₹55.4 crore, its biggest single-day total. On Thursday, the revenue fell below ₹10 crore for the first time. Now that ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ have raked in over ₹500 crores at the domestic Box Office, the movie is well positioned to fight with them.

Sunny’s Meltdown

In an interview, Anil Sharma, director of the film, remembered the day of the release and recounted an emotional phone call he made with actor Sunny Deol, as they both shared an emotional moment and how he woke up to audience response footage from early morning shows.

What clicked with the audience?

The 2023 action drama, with its song and fire, reminded viewers of 2003. Reminiscent of its time, the film catered to all those emotions and brought a large number of audiences to the silver screen. Cinemas took a serious hit even after the pandemic. Since people got habituated to watching films on OTT,

platforms and silver screens, the era saw a change with Bollywood biggies ‘Sooryavanshi, ‘Pathaan’, and now ‘Gadar 2, which has also been setting benchmarks. Cinema is back, and so are the viewers, and the Box-Office collections for ‘Gadar 2’ speak for themselves as the movie is sprinting towards a 500-crore run on the big screens.
