Actor and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has revealed that superstar Ranveer Singh is set to take on the iconic role of Don in the upcoming third iteration of the franchise. This much-anticipated announcement comes with a teaser that introduces Ranveer Singh to the franchise and its fervent fan base.
‘Don’ has been previously played to much critical acclaim by legendary actors Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.
Sharing the one-minute 58 seconds teaser, Farhan Akhtar wrote, “A New Era Begins #Don3.”
He also tagged the filmmaking duo Pushkar–Gayathri in his tweet, although the directorial responsibilities for ‘Don 3’ will be helmed by Farhan himself.
The teaser commences with a scene of Ranveer Singh seated in a high-rise building, his back turned to the camera. Clad in a leather jacket and boots, he exudes an air of intrigue while enjoying a cigarette. As he turns to face the camera, he confidently introduces himself as Don with the iconic lines “Main hoon Don” (I am Don).
Taking to his social media on Tuesday, Farhan shared a note that hinted at an exciting new chapter for the Don franchise. The note read, “In 1978, a character created by Salim-Javed and portrayed by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan with effortless elan, captured the imagination of theatregoers across the country. That enigmatic character was Don.
“In 2006, Don was reimagined and brought to life by Shah Rukh Khan in his own irresistibly charming way. From Don’s sardonic wit to his cool but menacing fury, Shah Rukh embodied his persona. As writer & director, I had a great time creating not one but two, ‘Don’ films with Shah Rukh and both experiences remain very close to my heart.
“The time has now come to take the legacy of Don forward and joining us in this new interpretation will be an actor whose talent and versatility I have long admired. We hope that you will show him the love you have so graciously and generously shown to Mr Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.
“A new era of Don begins in 2025. Watch this space.”
The ‘Don’ reboot, released in 2006, featured Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and Boman Irani in important roles. The film garnered accolades, including the Best Asian Film award at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival. Its sequel, ‘Don 2’, released in 2011, was also met with commercial success.
The original ‘Don’ film, however, was released way back in 1978 and featured a dynamic cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Pran, and Om Shivpuri.
